Summary: Taking a big leap in your career can seem like an impossible feat, but with a little direction, the move can be easier to navigate.

Contemplating making a bold career move? Follow these 5 steps to make one.

Making a bold move and changing careers or something similar can be very intimidating. We have broken it down into five steps to make your career move as easy as possible.

  1. Say Yes – Treat every day like it is your first day on the job. Say yes to every request you can even when you are nervous or unsure of yourself. A “make it work” kind of attitude will help you push through the toughest of challenges and you can always ask for help. Saying yes also requires a smile and positive outlook.
  2. Dress the Part – You aren’t going to get anywhere wearing yoga pants and a baggy shirt to work. Even jeans and a t-shirt won’t make the kind of impression that you need to stand out in a good way. Dressing professionally each day at work, even if you are an intern or just sitting behind a cubicle all day will empower you to take control of your career.
  3. Ask Questions – Asking questions that are thoughtful and meaningful show you are paying attention and want to be involved. Contributing with a question to a group project where you see an obvious flaw will help the project succeed. Asking questions, no matter how stupid, are better than making a mistake.
  4. Think about Yourself – There is a time and place to be selfish. Doing what you love and loving what you do are important to achieving success in your career. You can find ways to make whatever job you have at the moment yours, even if it isn’t the most ideal job. When you take pride in your work, it shows and it will be easier to do the work too.
  5. Ask for Feedback – Ask your supervisors for feedback on your work, especially if there aren’t performance reviews at your job. It is hard to hear criticism, but you won’t know what to work on unless you ask. In order to improve, you have to look at your weaknesses.
