Job Overview:
A prominent law firm located in Chicago, IL, is seeking a detail-oriented and technically proficient Patent Agent to support its Intellectual Property team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering or physical sciences and will be responsible for handling patent prosecution matters, evaluating inventions, and navigating complex intellectual property filings. The role involves working closely with attorneys and clients to manage patent application lifecycles and related documentation.

Duties:

• Draft and file U.S. patent applications across a range of technologies

• Prosecute patent applications before the USPTO

• Conduct analyses of patents, technical literature, and patent-related documents for strategic IP planning

• Review inventions and assess their patentability and alignment with business strategy

• Carry out patent searches (patentability, freedom to operate, invalidity, evidence of use)

• Track application progress and deadlines, managing relevant documentation

• Support responses to discovery requests related to IP disputes

• Participate in examiner interviews and hearings as necessary

• Collaborate on IP litigation and post-grant proceedings as applicable

• Contribute to special projects and legal research within the IP domain

• Maintain updated knowledge of developments in patent law and practice

Requirements:

• 1 to 3 years of relevant experience in patent preparation and prosecution

• Technical proficiency in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or physics

• Demonstrated experience drafting patent applications and managing the prosecution process

• Familiarity with litigation or post-grant proceedings is considered a plus

• Strong research, analytical, and communication skills

• Excellent organizational abilities and client-service orientation

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific discipline (engineering, physics, or related field)

Certifications:

• Registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is mandatory

Skills:

• Proficient in patent-related research and technical writing

• Detail-focused with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
