Job Overview:
A reputable mid-sized law firm is seeking an experienced Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Attorney to lead its growing practice group in Virginia Beach or Williamsburg. This is a strategic leadership role that includes advising clients on the design, implementation, and compliance of sophisticated employee benefit plans and executive compensation arrangements. The position is ideal for an attorney with deep knowledge of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and related federal regulations who enjoys client interaction and solving complex regulatory challenges across industries.

Duties:
Design, implement, and oversee employee benefit programs including:
Retirement plans
Health and welfare plans
Executive compensation and deferred compensation programs
Equity-based plans
Ensure compliance with Internal Revenue Code Sections 409A, 457(f), 280G, and 162(m)
Represent clients before the IRS, DOL, and PBGC in regulatory matters and audits
Advise on ERISA-related issues in mergers, acquisitions, and collective bargaining contexts
Provide counsel on ACA, HIPAA, HITECH, wellness programs, and retiree health plans
Work with a diverse client base including for-profit, nonprofit, government, and healthcare entities
Serve as practice lead for the firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation group
Support client development and firm-wide initiatives in this strategic area
Requirements:
Experience in employee benefits and executive compensation law
Extensive experience advising on regulatory compliance and risk mitigation strategies
Proven ability to manage complex benefits issues and lead client engagements
Entrepreneurial mindset and interest in practice growth and development
Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school
Certifications:
Active license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Skills:
In-depth knowledge of ERISA, the Internal Revenue Code, and applicable healthcare laws
Experience with government agency negotiations and plan audits
Strong legal research, drafting, and negotiation skills
Excellent client communication and relationship management abilities
Leadership and mentoring capabilities within a law firm environment
