Race & First Amendment Special Counsel
Responsibilities: Litigating and conducting other legal advocacy concerning a broad range of cases challenging governmental infringement on First Amendment rights with a racial justice lens, including cases pertaining to censorship, viewpoint discrimination, and police abuse of protesters. Leading investigations into new matters concerning violations of First Amendment rights with an eye towards advancing racial equity. Consulting and advising on cases and matters involving First Amendment rights in both state and federal courts, including an analysis of possibilities for intervention as appropriate. Developing strategies and participating in working groups and external conferences designed to address the intersection of racial discrimination and infringement of First Amendment rights, including the response to state legislative and executive actions censoring discussions about historical and present-day discrimination in educational settings and the suppression of protests against racial injustices. Investigating potential claims, building relationships with key community partners, preparing complaints, and participating in motion practice, discovery, hearings, oral arguments, trials, and appeals. Devising and implementing strategies to advance LDF’s racial equity policy agenda related to First Amendment issues. Serving as a public thought leader on issues concerning the intersection of First Amendment rights and racial discrimination. Representing LDF in the media, at conferences, and in other public venues. Developing and maintaining relationships with community partners, coalition members, and legal allies. Assisting in the creation and implementation of multi-pronged advocacy strategies. Preparing policy reports, memoranda, briefing papers, public education materials, and talking points for internal and external use. Fostering relationships with other advocates, lawyers, and civil rights organizations. Travel as necessary, when conditions permit; and. Other responsibilities as assigned.
