The candidate will be a key member of the organization’s executive team. Will guide, build upon and supervise the work of the mitigation teams as well as cultivate and develop on-going communication with key legislators and policy leaders both locally and nationally to create policies and practices that benefit justice involved youth and to garner support for the firm’ mission. Supervise and support the mitigation specialists with responsibility to interface and to integrate effectively with courts, court personnel, defense bar and New York City’s array of community based alternatives to incarceration services throughout the five boroughs. In collaboration with colleagues, and community-based partners, ensure effective systems to expedite case processing upon youth admission to custody at Rikers or in secure juvenile detention. Provide direct supervision to two Coordinators of Mitigation Supports and their respective teams to manage the weekly court calendars City-wide and connect with defense counsel in advance of court dates. Provide support as requested/needed to defense attorneys and to ATD/ATI programs on behalf of youth held in custody. Guide and support Coordinators to develop and facilitate individualized mitigation supports for youth at different points along the case process and criminal justice continuum. In collaboration with youths’ defense counsel, develop and oversee the preparation of supporting documentation and individualized plans for reduced bail, release on recognizance, pre-pleading and pre-sentence supports/planning. Collaborate with partners and subcontracted legal services to address the collateral consequences to youth of arrest and conviction. Ensure exceptional professionalism in the development of written documents to courts and court-related personnel; In collaboration with executive team and colleagues, train and provide on-going support and supervision to Mitigation Specialists to provide clear, individualized, concise, accurate and persuasive documentation and advocacy. In collaboration with youth advocacy leadership teams, effectively integrate neighborhood-based plans and supports into planning. Facilitate collaboration by multiple public and private stakeholders to address barriers to successful case processing and reentry, including collateral consequences and barriers around housing, immigration, education and gender identification. Provide leadership which supports collaboration, teamwork and mutual support, a culture of organizational excellence and continuous program improvement, fidelity to our model and to the people and communities serve. Develop policy positions and strategy rooted in the on the ground experiences of participants and staff to advance policy reforms for youth in NYC. Monitor and track relevant local and state legislative policy activity. Deliver testimony and prepare youth to deliver testimony before the City Council, state legislature, and other bodies. Build relationships with community-based organization, service providers, funders and academics. Represent Friends on relevant coalitions and work groups.
