Day to Day:
Defend school districts in a wide range of employment lawsuits, including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims involving teachers, staff, and administrators.
Manage disputes arising from complaints filed with agencies such as the EEOC, state education departments, and labor boards.
Oversee all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motion practice, and settlement negotiations, with a specific focus on public sector employment regulations and education law.
Advise school boards, superintendents, and HR departments on complex employment laws (e.g., Title IX, ADA, FMLA) and state-specific education regulations.
Develop proactive legal strategies to mitigate risk in labor disputes, employee discipline, hiring practices, and contract negotiations.
Provide counsel on union relations, teacher tenure, and collective bargaining agreements to prevent litigation and ensure compliance.
Review and draft school district employment policies on employee conduct, tenure, discipline, and termination, ensuring alignment with both employment and education laws.
Advise on drafting teacher and staff contracts, ensuring compliance with public education laws, union agreements, and collective bargaining terms.
Ensure district practices comply with federal and state regulations affecting public school employment, including Title IX, ADA, and other education-specific statutes.
Deliver tailored training to school district leadership, HR personnel, and administrators on legal compliance, best practices in employee relations, and litigation risk mitigation within the educational context.
Conduct workshops on anti-discrimination, sexual harassment prevention, and navigating teacher tenure and union rules, ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards.
Must Haves:
8+ years of school district defense experience, with a background ranging from senior associate to higher-level positions
Recent civil court and jury trial experience, serving as either first or second chair
Must be defense-sided
80% or more focus on (EL) litigation in the last five years
Bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees
Active member of the California Bar
