Job Overview:
A respected national law firm is seeking an experienced Environmental Law Partner to lead and build its Environmental Practice Group. This is a leadership opportunity for an attorney with substantial experience advising clients on environmental risk, compliance, and liability, particularly in the context of mergers and acquisitions. The role involves direct interaction with sophisticated clients across industries, collaboration with legal teams, and the opportunity to shape the direction of a growing practice. A portable book of business is required.

Duties:
Serve as lead environmental counsel in M&A transactions, focusing on due diligence, risk allocation, environmental insurance, and contract drafting
Advise clients on compliance and permitting issues under federal and state environmental laws
Evaluate environmental risks, including review of Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs)
Provide counsel on hazardous waste disposal and “superfund” (CERCLA) liability matters
Represent clients before federal and state environmental agencies
Handle matters involving CWA, CAA, RCRA, TSCA, ESA, and related environmental statutes
Coordinate with environmental consultants and collaborate with legal and technical teams
Develop and expand the environmental law practice within the firm
Manage and mentor junior attorneys and contribute to business development initiatives
Advise clients on emerging areas including renewable energy, endangered species, wetlands law, and corporate environmental stewardship
Requirements:
Minimum of 10 years of experience practicing environmental law
Extensive experience with CERCLA, RCRA, and environmental risk assessment in transactional contexts
Demonstrated ability to lead environmental due diligence and negotiate related provisions in corporate transactions
Strong litigation background related to environmental matters is a plus
Proficiency in working with consultants, regulatory agencies, and opposing counsel
A portable book of business is required
Currently licensed in Illinois or Colorado, or eligible for admission by comity or UBE portability
Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Certifications:
Active law license in Illinois or Colorado, or eligibility for admission
Skills:
Deep knowledge of environmental law and regulatory compliance
Excellent research, analytical, and drafting capabilities
Strong interpersonal and client communication skills
Leadership and team-building abilities
Ability to function as a strategic business advisor for clients
Detail-oriented with high-level project and case management skills
