Job Description
This full-time position of Legislative Counsel is in the Division of Legal Services for the Legislative Affairs Agency in Juneau, Alaska. Admission to the Alaska State Bar or eligibility for reciprocity or UBE score transfer is required. The position is in the exempt service and subject to certain restrictions on partisan political activities. The salary is Range 23 ($3,387.75 biweekly) and may be negotiable up to a Range 25 ($3,879.00 biweekly), depending on experience. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple vacancies.
General Duties
Drafting legislation and amendments to legislation while taking into account form and style, legal problems, relationship to current law, etc.
Providing opinions on legal issues to Legislators and Committees.
Assisting the revisor of statutes in editorial work relating to publication of the Alaska Statutes.
Other duties as may be assigned.
Preference will be given to applicants with superior writing skills and knowledge of constitutional and legal principles. Familiarity with Alaska Statues, Alaska Rules of Court, the Alaska Manual of Legislative Drafting, and the Uniform Rules of the Alaska Legislature is desirable. Litigation or contracts experience is also preferable.
The start date for this position is negotiable, but it is preferred that employment commence by October 2022.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduated from an approved school of law.
Admission to the Alaska State Bar or eligibility for reciprocity or UBE score transfer is required.
