Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm is hiring a Patent Attorney to join its Chemistry & Life Sciences Patent Prosecution team. This full-time role focuses on supporting innovations at the intersection of biology and software, including bioinformatics, computational biology, artificial intelligence, and related life sciences technologies. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of patent prosecution experience and a strong academic or industry background in one or more of the above fields.
Location:
Winston-Salem, NC
Duties:
Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications for biotechnology, life sciences, and software innovations
Prepare responses to USPTO Office Actions and support examiner interviews
Perform patentability, freedom-to-operate, and IP landscape analyses
Advise clients on patent strategy and portfolio development
Collaborate with inventors, researchers, and corporate legal teams
Support due diligence and licensing activities related to intellectual property
Requirements:
At least 3 years of patent prosecution experience in life sciences, computational biology, or bioinformatics
High proficiency in technical writing and patent claim drafting
Experience working with technologies at the intersection of biology and AI/software
Detail-oriented with strong communication skills
Ability to provide writing samples and academic transcripts upon request
Education:
Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, or a closely related scientific field
Certifications:
Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) required
For attorney candidates: active state bar license for the relevant office location
Skills:
Expertise in patent law related to life sciences and software
Excellent research, analytical, and legal writing abilities
Ability to manage complex patent portfolios and work independently
Strong collaboration and client communication skills
Familiarity with patent databases and IP management tools
