Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm is seeking a Patent Associate with an academic background in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related discipline. This role is ideal for candidates with 2–5 years of experience in patent prosecution who are passionate about supporting clients across a broad range of industries including software, wireless communications, semiconductors, and medical devices. The position provides hands-on opportunities in patent drafting, strategic IP counseling, and cross-functional matters involving litigation and transactions. A collaborative and supportive environment offers both professional development and client-facing responsibility from day one.

Location:

  • Portland, OR

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications across U.S. and international jurisdictions

  • Advise clients on patent strategy and IP portfolio management

  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and prior art analyses

  • Collaborate with legal teams on IP litigation and transactional matters

  • Stay current with developments in IP law and emerging technologies

  • Engage in firm-sponsored community, DE&I, and pro bono initiatives

Requirements:

  • 2–5 years of patent prosecution experience as an attorney or in combination with agent experience

  • Exposure to a variety of technologies including software, wireless systems, optics, semiconductors, and medical devices

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical and legal concepts clearly and persuasively

  • Capable of managing multiple deadlines and projects efficiently

  • Strong sense of initiative and teamwork in a fast-paced legal environment

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related technical field

Certifications:

  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Active member of the state bar for the relevant office location, or eligible for admission

Skills:
