Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm located in Portland, ME, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Associate Attorney to join its Labor and Employment practice group. This position involves providing strategic legal guidance and representation across a wide array of employment-related matters at both the state and federal levels. The role offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic, team-oriented setting with exposure to litigation, compliance advisory work, and labor-management relations.

Duties:

• Represent clients in employment litigation in state and federal courts

• Appear before administrative agencies on labor and employment matters

• Provide proactive legal advice on workplace policies and compliance issues

• Advise clients on matters related to:

  • Wrongful termination

  • Discrimination and harassment

  • Wage and hour regulations

  • Employee privacy laws

  • OSHA compliance

• Handle issues involving union negotiations, elections, and grievance arbitrations

• Draft and negotiate employment contracts, severance agreements, and non-compete provisions

• Guide public and private sector employers on affirmative action and equal opportunity requirements

Requirements:

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience practicing labor and employment law in a private law firm setting

• Demonstrated ability to manage complex matters and provide high-quality client service

• Proven record of strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy

• Willingness to travel occasionally as needed for client matters or court appearances

• Admission to the Maine State Bar, or eligibility to obtain admission

Education:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

• Active license to practice law in Maine or the ability to promptly gain admission

Skills:

• Excellent verbal and written communication

• Strong legal, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities

• Confidence in managing litigation and handling high-pressure situations

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented legal environment
