Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research and draft memoranda on federal, state, and local environmental statutes and regulations
  • Prepare and file pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and dispositive briefs in environmental litigation matters
  • Represent clients before regulatory agencies and in administrative hearings
  • Defend or prosecute citizen suit actions under environmental statutes
  • Manage all phases of litigation, from case strategy development through trial and appeal
  • Negotiate settlements, consent decrees, and administrative orders with regulators and opposing counsel
  • Oversee environmental due diligence in transactional contexts and advise on compliance risks
  • Supervise and coach junior attorneys, paralegals, and summer associates on case management and substantive issues
  • Monitor evolving environmental legislation, policy developments, and court decisions

Requirements

  • Seven years of litigation experience focused on environmental law at a reputable law firm or government agency
  • Admission to the New York Bar in good standing
  • Demonstrated success in handling high-stakes environmental enforcement and citizen suit litigation
  • Strong analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Ability to balance multiple matters under tight deadlines and shifting priorities
  • Proven leadership in mentoring junior legal staff

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Political Science, or related field preferred

Certifications

  • Admission to the New York Bar
  • Certification in environmental law or related continuing legal education credentials a plus

Skills

  • In-depth knowledge of NEPA, CERCLA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, and state environmental regulations
  • Proficiency with litigation and document-management software
  • Exceptional negotiation and dispute-resolution abilities
  • Strategic thinker with strong business acumen
  • Excellent client-relationship management and communication skills
