Temporary Staff Attorney

The candidate will conduct on-site “legal check-ups” of clients at health-care facilities, file petitions to expunge criminal records where appropriate, address other civil legal needs of participants, and develop expertise in child support, housing and other substantive matters that impact patient and community health. Will screen potential clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate. Conduct preliminary and follow-up interviews with participants and administer “legal check-ups” to comprehensively assess participants’ need for civil legal services. Conduct factual investigations, analysis, and legal research for pending client matters, and based on those findings, advise clients about options. Prepare legal documents, including correspondence, pleadings, motions, discovery, memoranda of law, briefs, and other legal documents. Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals. Work closely with non-profit organizations, community groups, and other legal providers to conduct trainings and community outreach and education, and to support appropriate strategies that benefit the target populations. Support Maryland Legal Aid’s Community Lawyering Initiative by assisting with expungement clinics and other programming as feasible. Conduct “Know Your Rights” legal information sessions with clients and participants. Work with pro bono attorneys, students, and volunteers. and Other duties as assigned. Should have Admission to Maryland Bar or another state bar and eligibility and willingness to apply for admission to the Maryland Bar at the earliest opportunity. 2+ years of legal experience preferred.
