Job Overview: A law firm in Oakland, CA, is seeking an Entry Level Patent Attorney with a background in chemistry or other relevant physical sciences field. Duties:

  • Assist in patent prosecution proceedings.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate searches and analyses.
  • Draft patent applications and responses to office actions.
  • Communicate with clients, patent examiners, and colleagues regarding patent matters.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis related to intellectual property issues.
  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on various patent-related projects.

Requirements:

  • Eligibility to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in chemistry, or other relevant physical sciences field; or pertinent industry experience.
  • 0-3 years of patent attorney or agent experience.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Interest in patent prosecution.
  • Admission to practice before the USPTO is a plus.
  • Ph.D. in chemistry or other relevant physical sciences field is desired.
  • Prior patent prosecution experience in a law firm setting is a plus.

Education:

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in chemistry, or other relevant physical sciences field; or pertinent industry experience.

Certifications:

  • Eligibility for admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Skills:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Legal research and analysis abilities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and legal research databases.
