What is the purpose
This is a position for a lawyer in the Houston office of Shell’s Global Litigation Department.
The successful candidate will be charged with handling litigation matters and regulatory challenges in the United States in a proactive, timely, cost effective and professional manner in furtherance of business objectives and protection of shareholder interests.
Legal Counsel Litigation
What is the role
The successful candidate may also be assigned to handle litigation matters pending in other jurisdictions outside the U.S. The role will report to Associate General Counsel Global Litigation U.S. Upstream and Integrated Gas/Renewables & Energy Solutions and Latin America & Caribbean.
This role is accountable for:
Independently handling a broad range of cases in a variety of areas and participating as a team member in handling more complex, higher exposure cases
Identifying legal issues relevant to matters handled and acting with the appropriate urgency
Performing Early Case Assessments, interviewing potential witnesses, gathering key documents, and working with business stakeholders to develop, pursue, and achieve litigation objectives that consider the company’s strategic goals
Participating in the development and review of Requests for Proposal issued to external counsel, and working with internal team and external law firms to develop an appropriate fee arrangement for each matter
Collaborating with outside counsel in the development of case strategy and tactics, approving work by outside counsel and expert witnesses, providing input on key filings, participating in settlement discussions and mediations, and attending, monitoring, and reporting on trials or other proceedings
Communicating with and updating the business on significant developments in the matters being handled.
Understanding and implementing the department’s structured approach to avoiding, managing, resolving, communicating learnings from, and anticipating trends in litigation matters
Preparing and updating Case Management Plans and ensuring accuracy of information the department’s matter management database
Developing and managing the budget in handled matters, including costs and fees incurred with external counsel, experts, and vendors
Preparing reports to business leaders, Legal department management, and external auditors regarding developments that may impact the likely exposure associated with a claim or investigation
Supervising paralegals and working with Shell’s e-discovery team to ensure appropriate preservation, collection, and production of relevant documents and information
Reviewing invoices from external counsel and experts for reasonableness and conformance with Shell’s billing policies
Collaborating with Shell lawyers in other departments in the Legal Organization regarding litigation risks potentially impacting their areas of responsibility.
Understanding the Shell Business Principles and Code of Conduct to the point of identifying and reporting potential breaches with an accurate sense of reality
Requirements
What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Candidate must have at least 4 – 5 (four to five) years in Legal profession, hands-on experience with US litigation in either a private practice, in-house, or governmental role.
Must have a Law degree by accredited US school.
Must be admitted and in good standing with the Texas Bar.
Must have strong analytical skills and an ability to recognize and respond to legal issues, recognize legal and reputational risks, and develop cost effective legal and business resolutions.
Must have strong writing skills including the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly, to communicate effectively with internal and external lawyers, and to present key issues and concepts to business clients in non-legalistic language.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to collaborate and cooperate effectively with business clients of various backgrounds, as well as internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
Demonstrated ability to work in team, to grow, and to take on new challenges.
Must have excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Must have strong advocacy skills and an ability to provide practical legal counsel to the businesses, including in informal briefings and formal presentations.
Must have the ability to budget and effectively manage outside legal resources.
Must have the ability to work with more experienced practitioners, and to take advice and coaching into account in the delivery of services.
Fluency or ability to work in Spanish language is preferable.
