Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent to join its Chemical Practice Group in Greenville, SC. The role involves working with a diverse range of clients, from startups to large corporations, to secure patent protection for innovations in advanced materials, specialty chemicals, and more.

Duties

• Meet with clients and inventors to understand new ideas and inventions.
• Evaluate the patentability of innovations.
• Conduct research to determine the scope of protection claimed by the inventor.
• Prepare, draft, and file patent applications.
• Prepare letters of instruction to foreign counsel for foreign counterparts to US patent applications.
• Reply to communications from patent offices during the patent application process.
• Work closely with attorneys and in-house counsel.
• Perform research and analysis on patent and IP-related issues.
• Maintain and manage documentation processes relating to patent laws, regulations, and procedures.
• Adhere to a standard of ethics.
• Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
• Must be a member of the U.S. patent bar.
• Minimum of 1 year of patent drafting and prosecution experience required.
• Strong technical proficiency with Microsoft products and legal databases.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Analytical thinker with strong interpersonal skills.
• Detail-oriented with effective time management and personal organization.
• High sense of urgency and ability to work efficiently under pressure.

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.

Certifications

• Membership in the U.S. patent bar.
