Wealth Tax Director
Duties: The candidate manages the Wealth Tax Liaison Team, inclusive of activities that support and enable meeting Wilmington Trust’s fiduciary obligations with respect to reporting and filing fiduciary income tax and informational returns, while ensuring greater performance, creating efficiencies and implementing strategies for partnering with customer-facing Advisors and outside/outsourced Tax Services providers, along with managing and mitigating associated risk. Works with the external provider to ensure compliance with Federal, state, local and international tax law, if and as applicable, and ensure accurate and timely reporting of tax matters/filings. Monitors current and impending changes to tax regulation and legislation facilitates engagement with the vendor and makes appropriate updates to policies, procedures, and strategies, as necessary. Responsible for the group’s compliance with internal policies, procedures, and controls, and reporting on functions of the group, the external provider, and as otherwise required by senior leadership. Ensures proper systems, procedures and controls are in place for those functions that support the tax services provided by the outsourced provider on behalf of Wilmington Trust, the Tax Liaison Team, and its processes, including but not limited to, cost basis, tax software, mailings, etc. Ensures accurate, timely filing of fiduciary returns prepared on behalf of Wilmington Trust by the vendor. Escalate discovered issues as appropriate. Plans for and develop tax calendar and coordinates timing and inputs for the Tax Liaison Team and outsourced provider to ensure all internal and external deadlines are met. Responsible for Wealth Tax communication that goes to the field to keep them apprised of developments, trends, legal and/or legislative updates, and including strategy development, execution, content, and medium. Oversee and participate in maintaining and updating the Insider tax website as needed, and if applicable. Fosters strong cross-functional relationships with Operations, Advisors, Market Leaders, Area Executives, and senior management by serving as the lead tax liaison for general inquiries, escalations, communication of project and process initiatives, and plans of action. Manages team activities by metrics by providing insight into capacity and risk situations requiring immediate or longer-term solutions for those functions within the Tax Liaison Team to maximize efficiency. Manages and maintains a profitability and unit cost reporting discipline for the group. Oversees outsourced third-party contracts and services, including but not limited to technology, professional services, and accounting. Manages all process improvement initiatives for the Tax Liaison Team which result from automation, risk, audit, new products, or other drivers. Exercises the usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management, and terminations. Understands and adheres to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Design, implement maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management. Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
