A San Diego-based law firm with a focused practice in tax dispute resolution is seeking a highly experienced attorney to manage complex tax controversy and litigation matters. This role requires a deep understanding of both civil and criminal tax disputes involving federal and state taxing authorities. The position offers the opportunity to lead multifaceted legal matters, mentor junior legal staff, and work in a supportive and client-centered legal environment.
Represent clients in a broad range of federal and California-based tax controversy matters, including investigations and litigation involving IRS and state entities such as EDD, FTB, and CDTFA
Oversee litigation strategy, case preparation, and courtroom representation in high-stakes disputes
Conduct advanced-level legal research and analysis to support nuanced tax-related cases
Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, legal clerks, and support staff
Ensure timely communication with clients and maintain efficient matter management
Collaborate with firm leadership to refine procedures and elevate client service
Minimum 5 years of substantive experience in tax law, with direct involvement in civil and/or criminal tax controversy matters
Demonstrated ability to independently manage litigation from intake through resolution
Familiarity with IRS and California tax authority procedures and administrative appeals
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school (required)
Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation (preferred)
Active license to practice law in California (required)
Proficient in advanced legal writing and case analysis
Skilled in legal research tools specific to tax law
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Excel and financial modeling
Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex matters simultaneously
