A prominent international law firm is seeking an experienced Privacy Counsel to join its U.S. Data Protection, Privacy, and Cybersecurity team. The role focuses on providing legal advice to clients across various industries on privacy and data protection compliance, primarily involving U.S. federal and state privacy laws, GDPR, and cross-border data regulations. The position is ideal for a privacy attorney with 3–7 years of relevant legal experience and a proactive approach to advising on regulatory frameworks, contractual obligations, and data governance.
Advise clients on compliance with:
U.S. privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, COPPA, TCPA, FTC Act)
GDPR and other global frameworks
State-level privacy regulations and legislative developments
Design, implement, and evaluate privacy compliance programs and risk mitigation strategies
Counsel on cross-border data transfers, localization requirements, and international data flow laws
Provide guidance on privacy implications in digital products, advertising, AI, and big data
Draft and negotiate:
Data protection agreements
Vendor and consumer data-sharing contracts
Develop and evaluate privacy notices, consent frameworks, and consumer rights protocols
Conduct privacy due diligence in M&A and other corporate transactions
Assist with regulatory enforcement, investigations, and consumer complaints
Support readiness for upcoming privacy laws and harmonization across jurisdictions
Contribute to incident response efforts and collaborate with forensic teams on breach notification
Participate in privacy tabletop exercises and evaluate incident response plans
Advise on enterprise data governance, security frameworks, and risk management strategies
3–7 years of legal experience focused on privacy and data protection law
Deep understanding of U.S. federal and state privacy laws; familiarity with GDPR strongly preferred
Demonstrated experience counseling clients on privacy issues and managing regulatory risk
Ability to independently handle complex matters and interface with cross-functional teams
Proven skills in drafting and negotiating privacy-related contracts and documentation
Prior experience in a law firm preferred; in-house experience with relevant depth considered
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
CIPP/US, CIPT, or equivalent certifications (preferred but not required)
Expertise in global and domestic privacy frameworks
Strong legal writing and verbal communication abilities
Client-focused and capable of handling high-level privacy advisory work
Effective at working collaboratively across departments and disciplines
Strategic thinker with an eye for regulatory trends and industry best practices
