Voting Rights Expert (Part-Time)
The candidate will support Public Policy team with a goal to ensure that the company’s policies, operations and enforcement identify and properly address suppressive and intimidating voting content on the platform. Will drive the development and delivery of U.S. elections/voting rights training for teams drafting voting-related content and advertising policies, leadership overseeing U.S. election operations, elections operations center staff, and any election-related escalation teams. Will collaborate with product and policy teams and provide advice on potential gaps in its voter suppression policies and enforcement. Develop and deliver customized training on U.S. elections / voting rights based on intended audience. Provide historical context on voter suppression and intimidation in the United States, including targeting African Americans and minority communities, racial appeals, and the voting protections afforded by the Voting Rights Act. Discuss recent trends in voter suppression and intimidation. Focus on enforcement of company voter suppression policies, explaining what voting-related content is prohibited on the company site, and providing specific examples. Advise product and policy teams on potential gaps in its voter suppression policies and enforcement in the form of charts and written materials that are illustrative of these challenges. Advise the company as it handles time-sensitive issues flagged for internal escalation, or grapples with borderline content that falls in the gray area around the edges of company policies. Interface with external voting rights groups and surface key concerns internally to enable timely resolution. Must Haves: Experience in the area of voting rights law coupled with knowledge of recent and historic trends in voter suppression and intimidation. Familiarity or experience with policy development. Experience with delivery of high impact trainings to large audiences and project management. Experience interacting and communicating with different executive levels, both internally and externally. 10+ years of experience. Nice to Have: Knowledge of recent and historic trends in voter suppression and intimidation in the context of social media/technology. Education: Law Degree required.
