Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Mid-Level Product Design and User Interface Patent Agent to join their Kansas City, MO office. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in cutting-edge technologies such as software, AI, IoT, and quantum technologies. This role requires solid law firm, engineering, and industry experience, as well as a high level of academic achievement, superior communication skills, and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications related to product design, user interface technologies, and other advanced technological fields.
• Conduct in-depth research and analysis of existing patents to determine patentability and freedom to operate.
• Work directly with clients to identify patentable inventions and provide strategic advice on the protection of intellectual property.
• Draft technical descriptions, claims, and detailed patent applications that clearly outline and protect innovative design and user interface technologies.
• Collaborate with engineers, inventors, and stakeholders in the technology sector to understand technical concepts and turn them into patent applications.
• Respond to office actions from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and other patent offices worldwide.
• Manage all stages of the patent process, from application filing through issuance, and handle post-grant proceedings when required.
• Stay up-to-date with industry trends, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, software development, quantum computing, and IoT technologies.
• Participate in strategy meetings to discuss the company’s intellectual property portfolio and provide insights into competitive patent landscapes.

Requirements:

• A minimum of 2+ years of patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house setting.
• Expertise in software-related technologies, artificial intelligence, IoT, networking, and/or quantum technologies.
• Strong technical background with a degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
• Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced legal environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Experience in working with diverse clients from startups to established corporations in high-tech industries.

Education & Certifications:

• Bachelor or advanced degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
• Juris Doctor (JD) and admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) are required.
• Additional certifications in relevant technical areas (optional but beneficial).
