Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent with expertise in high-tech patent prosecution to join their San Diego, CA office. The ideal candidate will have a background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering, and at least one year of relevant experience.

Duties

  • Review invention disclosure documents and conduct invention disclosure meetings.
  • Conduct prior searches, review references, and analyze patentability.
  • Draft patent applications.
  • Review USPTO office actions, formulate response strategies, conduct examiner interviews, and draft and file responses.
  • Manage U.S. and foreign dockets.
  • Analyze patents in connection with due diligence and/or freedom to operate analyses.

Requirements

  • USPTO admission is required.
  • At least one year of patent prosecution experience in technologies such as hardware and devices, software, database technology, artificial intelligence, wireless, and image and/or signal processing.
  • Prior work experience in a law firm is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of professionalism in engaging with demanding clients.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple competing priorities and responsibilities.
  • Highly organized with extreme attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings.

Education

  • Background in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and/or chemical engineering.

Certifications

  • USPTO admission.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in patent drafting and prosecution.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
