Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Junior To Mid-Level Product Design And User Interface Patent Associate Attorney to join their team in Wilmington, DE. The ideal candidate will have experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in cutting-edge technologies such as software, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum technologies. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineers, designers, and other professionals to support the firm’s clients in protecting intellectual property, ensuring legal compliance, and navigating the complexities of patent law. This role requires strong analytical skills, technical expertise, and effective communication abilities to provide top-notch legal services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct patent preparation and prosecution, including drafting and filing patent applications with the USPTO
  • Collaborate with clients, engineers, and technical experts to understand product designs, software, and emerging technologies
  • Advise clients on intellectual property protection strategies and legal risks associated with new products and innovations
  • Conduct legal research and analysis of relevant technologies about patent law
  • Manage patent portfolios, including reviewing prior art, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and advising on patent infringement matters
  • Assist in the preparation and prosecution of domestic and international patent applications, including responses to USPTO office actions
  • Stay current with technological advancements and patent law updates relevant to clients' industries
  • Provide legal guidance on user interface designs and usability patents related to digital products
  • Represent clients in USPTO proceedings, including appeals and re-examinations
  • Support litigation teams with intellectual property disputes and enforcement actions

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution
  • Strong background and industry experience in software, AI technologies, IoT, networking, or quantum technologies
  • Exceptional legal research, writing, and communication skills
  • Experience working within a law firm setting or in-house legal team
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple client matters simultaneously

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field
  • Admission to at least one state bar (Delaware bar admission is preferred but not required)

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent preparation and prosecution related to software, AI, IoT, and quantum technologies
  • In-depth understanding of technical designs, engineering processes, and emerging technologies
  • Knowledge of patent laws and procedures both domestically and internationally
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and client-management skills
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both legal and non-legal stakeholders
  • Experience with patent portfolio management and intellectual property strategy development
