DEFINITION Performs general public duties, processes, or operations as well as specialized police assignments for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of federal and state laws, municipal ordinances, and adheres to the police department’s policy and procedures manual.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives supervision from the Police Chief and direct supervision from the Sergeant. Exercises no supervision.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES –

Important responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

1.

Responds to radio dispatched calls for service including medical calls, crimes in progress, or crimes that have already been committed.

2.

Observes, analyzes, and evaluates situations to determine appropriate action.

3.

Monitors and directs traffic and crowd control activities and intervenes as necessary to preserve the peace.

4.

Arrests, detains, and apprehends a variety of offenders/suspects by use of necessary physical means.

5.

Performs prolonged walking or standing while patrolling on foot.

6.

Pursues suspects on foot involving running, climbing, jumping, and maneuvering under, over, or around obstacles.

7.

Cares for the injured and administers basic emergency medical aid.

8.

Reads, interprets, and enforces federal and state laws as well as municipal ordinances and traffic codes.

9.

Prepares and presents clear and accurate written and oral reports.

Other Important Responsibilities and Duties

1.

Testifies in court when required.

2.

Administers breathalyzer tests on suspected intoxicated persons in compliance with statutes and ordinances.

3.

Observes, retains, and recalls people, places, and situations in detail.

4.

Identifies and reports maintenance needs of assigned equipment including vehicles, video cameras, wireless microphones, weapons, and tazer.

5.

Operates police vehicles and other equipment such as radar detection devices, tazer, copiers, etc.

6.

Demonstrates creativity regarding police related problems.

7.

Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the general public.

8.

Fulfills assigned internal duties.

9.

Provides animal control services while on duty.

10.

Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.

11.

Attends in-service training sessions or other sessions deemed appropriate by the Supervisor.

12.

Escorts funeral attendants.

13.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

1.

The principles, procedures, and equipment involved in police work including crime scene processing and first aid.

2.

Operations, services, and activities of a law enforcement program.

3.

Offensive and defensive weapons nomenclature and theory.

4.

Self defense tactics.

5.

Modern police methods and procedures related to patrol, traffic control, and investigation techniques.

6.

Departmental rules and regulations.

7.

Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to the search and seizure and the preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases.

8.

Microsoft applications, word processing, spreadsheet, and data base software.

Ability to:

3.

Interpret and apply laws and regulations.

4.

Use and care for firearms.

5.

Demonstrate keen powers of observation and memory.

11.

12.

Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:

Running, walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time

Effecting arrests

Subduing resisting individuals

Chasing fleeing subjects

Running, walking, crouching, or crawling during emergency operations

Working in confined places or awkward positions

Moving equipment and injured/deceased persons

Climbing stairs/ladders

Performing lifesaving and rescue procedures

Operating assigned equipment, including firearms and vehicles

13.

Effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to:

Hazardous chemicals and materials

Dangerous firearms

Intense heat

Electrical hazards

Dangerous animals

Armed and dangerous persons

Communicable diseases

Hazards of emergency driving

Emotional and criminal persons

Hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic

Natural and man-made disasters

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES High School diploma or equivalent. One year of experience required. Graduation from a POST accredited Missouri Police Academy required. Must possess a valid Missouri State driver’s license. Must be POST certified. LEO Academy Training; Type III Certification; State Class A license; HAZMAT training; RADAR certified; NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Certification; BAC Instrument Operator; MO Class A Peace Officers License; Drug Interdiction; Pepper Spray Certification; Defense Tactics Certification; Firearms Qualifications; MULE Certification; Dept. of Health Type III DataMaster Permit; Specialty Impact Weapons Training required. Must successfully complete periodic firearms, medical, and other training required to maintain POST certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions May be exposed to extreme weather, dust or pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, bodily fluids, electrical or mechanical hazards, and extreme noise. May have poor ventilation. May be exposed to emergency and disaster situations; may work in stressful situations.

Tools and Equipment Departmental equipment and tools necessary to perform the functions of the positions include computers, vehicles, hazardous material protective gear, chemical developers, biological fluid collection equipment, measuring devices, recording devices, telephones, clipboards, camera, flashlights, handgun, shotgun, baton, paint, rope, evidence markers.

Miscellaneous Requirements

1.

May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.

2.

Subject to emergency call-in.

3.

Must successfully complete pre-employment substance abuse testing.

4.

Must successfully complete pre-employment background investigation.

5.

Will be subject to random substance abuse testing. EOE / Affirmative Action / ADA
