Assistant Director, Risk Management Services
Duties: Reporting to the Chief Risk Officer, will manage operations and supervise personnel related to insurance claims involving property, liability, and worker’s compensation. Will manage systems for the collection and analysis of exposure and loss data, and maintain applicable records. Will assist university units with insurance programs and procedures, develop risk mitigation strategies, provide review and recommendations for risk management contractual issues, and develop program goals that support departmental and institutional strategic and enterprise risk management objectives. Manages and supervises university processes and staff for property claims and worker compensation. Monitors liability claim activity, and coordinates with legal counsel and claim adjusters as needed. Participates in incident investigation and settlement discussions as requested. Provides technical expertise and guidance to university contracting units on insurance specifications, contractual risk transfer, including indemnification and hold harmless provisions, waivers of subrogation, limitation of liability, and other risk transfer issues as needed. Provides technical expertise and guidance to university units, administrators, and employees regarding scope and applicability of university/state insurance programs for property, general and professional liability, worker’s compensation, and international travel. Collects and maintains institutional loss exposure data as needed to support insurance underwriting and procurement. Performs analysis of loss data and prepares summary reports to identify loss trends and effectiveness of loss prevention/control measures, and evaluates metrics to support calculation of total cost of risk for trend monitoring and benchmarking. Develops needs assessment and evaluation criteria for procurement and implementation of a risk management information system. Develops internal procedures for data collection, risk information reports, management of claims data, and loss exposure data. Develops positive working relationships within the UA, with the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) Risk Management Division, adjusters, insurance brokers, carriers, and others as needed. Represents the Risk Management Services unit on university committees as assigned. Represents the Chief Risk Officer in his/her absence. Preparation and presentation of training materials for university units, administrators and employees on risk management topics. Participation in professional organizations to stay abreast of best practices in risk management and identify emerging trends and new risks as they develop. Position requires occasional travel in and out-of-state to provide services to outlying UA facilities, to coordinate with the ADOA Risk Management Division, and participate in training and professional development as needed.
