Global Health Legal Advisor
The candidate will work with the GHAI team to support in-country partners on campaigns to pass public health policies in low and middle income countries on a variety of health issues. The LA will: provide legal analysis of legislation, regulations, and other initiatives at the national and/or subnational level; develop frameworks for legal analysis of public health policies; collect and analyze relevant laws; identify and support the work of in-country lawyers with legal and subject matter expertise; and identify gaps in legislation and opportunities for improvement to inform the setting of policy change priorities on public health issues. Working closely with partners, the LA will assist with the drafting of legislation or regulations, and provide ongoing assistance as drafts are modified. Additionally, the LA will analyze and respond to opposition drafts, identifying weaknesses, loopholes etc. and offering solutions; develop legal strategies as an integrated part of overall country advocacy strategies for policy change; provide analysis and support of in-country public health litigation; develop and maintain sample legislation and regulations for those considering legislation for the first time or for comparing weaknesses in specific provisions; oversee maintenance of an inventory and analysis of countries’ public health policies and global best practices; develop resource materials and tools relevant to advancing policy; and plan and conduct legal trainings and policy workshops for lawyers on key public health issues and serve as the legal advisor to GHAI team. JD (or foreign equivalent) plus 2 years of experience in global health law OR LLM in Global Health Law and 1 year of experience in global health law. Also required: 1 year of experience performing legal analysis on non-communicable diseases; 1 year of experience using global trade and investment law to advance global health; and 1 year of experience developing training materials and/or resources on legal interventions to promote global health. Job is at Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids in DC with up to 30% international travel.
