(PWHD) was founded in Virginia in 1954.  Since then, our practice has grown to cover several areas of law including asbestos litigation, business law, elder law, employment and labor law, personal injury, product liability, and technology law, as well as consulting services.



We are currently seeking an active Virginia-bar certified Wills, Trust, Estate, & Elder Law Associate to join the product liability division.  The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience drafting estate documents, advising on distribution issues, and advising clients on wills, trusts, estates and elder law to include Social Security, Medicare and Veterans Administration issues.  A successful candidate will also have strong academic and professional credentials along with excellent writing and communication skills.



The Wills, Trust, Estate, & Elder Law Associate position requires being self-motivated, organized, and able to work under pressure while meeting deadlines.  Additionally, this position is expected to use Microsoft Office and other software tools to create professional, complete, accurate, and detailed documents.  The Wills, Trust, Estate, & Elder Law Associate position will work closely with Partners in the product liability division on a regular basis providing updates and seeking guidance as needed with occasional projects from other attorneys as requested.



Responsibilities:





  • Resolve estate planning and distribution issues for a large, geriatric clientele currently represented by the product liability division, with the future potential of developing the attorney’s own independent clientele;


  • Draft and edit estate planning documents;


  • Advise clients on estate planning and elder law matters to include Medicare, Social Security and Veterans Administration issues;


  • Counsel clients who are acting as personal representatives in their duties and responsibilities;


  • Attend distribution hearings in wrongful death and survival cases, as necessary;


  • Assist with locating potential beneficiaries and determining which beneficiaries qualify for various claims under the Virginia wrongful death statute, Virginia survival statute, and maritime wrongful death and survival law;


  • Work with the settlement division to ensure settlements are disbursed properly and in a timely manner;


  • Assist and support the products liability division team in large and complex cases;


  • Develop and execute effective strategies appropriately;


  • Ensure the successful meeting of all deadlines while managing several projects simultaneously;


  • Assist with other duties as requested.




 



Required Skills/Experience:





  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school;


  • Active member in good standing of the Virginia Bar;


  • 5+ years of experience specializing in estate planning, including drafting and executing documents;


  • Extensive knowledge of estate planning and administration of Social Security, Medicare and other elder law subject matter;


  • Dedicated, honest, reliable, and understands confidentiality obligations;


  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines;


  • Superior communicator (written and verbal) with strong interpersonal skills;


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications;


  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with others;


  • Limited travel may be required.
