Job Title: Private Education Attorney (Hybrid)
Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm in San Diego, CA, is seeking a driven and experienced attorney with a strong interest in representing private and independent schools. The position involves providing strategic legal guidance across a range of education-related matters, including contracts, compliance, investigations, and internal policies. Duties:
Provide legal consultation to private and independent K–12 schools on employment, student, and administrative matters
Draft, assess, and revise employment contracts and enrollment agreements
Create and update policies, handbooks, and waivers tailored for staff, students, and parents
Conduct and guide internal investigations involving employee or student conduct
Offer guidance on terminations, tuition-related disputes, and severance arrangements
Counsel clients on regulatory topics such as wage and hour laws, mandated reporting, leaves of absence, and privacy obligations
Requirements:
Active membership in the California State Bar
At least 3 years of focused experience in employment law
Prior work with educational institutions or nonprofit organizations is strongly preferred, particularly in areas involving student affairs, employment issues, governance, or school operations
Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Certifications:
Active California law license in good standing
Skills:
Strong drafting and analytical skills tailored to education and employment contexts
Practical knowledge of California-specific regulations impacting private schools
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across client and legal teams
Excellent communication and client-relations skills
