The candidate will carry a vertical caseload and work closely with other members on team in trial preparation. Interview clients that are incarcerated, at Norristown State Hospital, in community placements and in hospitals. Try insanity cases. Second seat homicide cases where mental health is a prevalent issue. Work with experts and other stakeholders in the representation of clients. Work in a collaborative team atmosphere. Prepare mitigation reports. Conduct competency and forced medication hearings. Attend competency evaluations conducted by the Court’s Mental Health Unit. Coordinate mental health services for clients and provide status reports on client’s well being. Fill in for other assignments within the Mental Health Unit while other attorneys are out. Juris Doctor required, must be Pennsylvania bar member (active and in good standing). Significant criminal defense litigation experience specifically in the representation of adults charged with criminal offenses that suffer mental health challenges. Must have 5 years public defender experience, preferred. Jury trial experience required. A genuine interest, affinity, and background in representing our clients with serious mental health conditions, brain injuries or intellectual disabilities. Familiar with the Mental Health Procedures Act. Prior mental health experience, including familiarity with criminal mental health court, civil commitment hearings, competency hearings, forced medication hearings and insanity issues strongly preferred. Should be prepared to complete a minimum rotation of two years. Excellent writing and oral skills. Ability to travel to courtrooms, prisons, Norristown State Hospital, and other community placements.
