Staff Attorney - Community Engagement Unit
The candidate will serve all four counties. The Community Engagement Unit (“CEU”) focuses on providing community outreach and collaborating with a broad and ever-expanding network of community partners. Will organize outreach presentations and legal service clinics; recruit, train and manage volunteer attorneys and law students; and represent income-eligible clients, largely relating to the collateral consequences of having a criminal record, including pardons, expungements and waiver of criminal court debt. Duties include : Interview clients, assist in determining eligibility for services, and ascertain and investigate facts; Conduct legal research and interpret statutes, case law, regulations, and other sources of law; Provide advice and counsel to clients; Prepare legal documents, including but not necessarily limited to: briefs, pleadings, motions, notices, correspondence, memoranda, discovery and documents responsive to discovery requests; Develop strategy and arguments for presentation of cases and assist in preparation of witnesses for hearings and trials; Represent clients at hearings, in trial and appellate courts, and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies; Review decisions and consult with management team to determine the merit of potential appeals; Maintain organized case files pursuant to LASP standards and requirements. Assist with recruiting, training and managing a diverse, robust group of LASP volunteers, including pro bono attorneys, law and undergraduate students, and non-legal volunteers; Conduct outreach, clinics, community education, and workshops; Participate in external professional and community organizations relevant to casework and collaborate with programs to strengthen services to clients; Develop and sustain partnerships and provide resources and training to those partners (including directly impacted people, service providers, employers, volunteer attorneys and students, and other agencies supporting people with records); and Assist in the creation and updating of LASP’s legal resources, such as flyers, pro se materials, fact sheets, etc.Track client and programmatic data and outcomes and ensure requirements of funders are met; Maintain awareness of all sources of community help for potential LASP clients.
