A law firm seeks a patent agent specializing in biomedical devices for its New York City, NY office. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in intellectual property, particularly in patent prosecution, with a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technology.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications and incorporate scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Investigate general and specific technologies as needed.
  • Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Communicate with inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office regarding patent applications.
  • Interact professionally with clients, lawyers, and staff at all levels.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Stay informed on technology trends and make recommendations.
  • Engage in continuing education to maintain accreditation.
  • Enter, maintain, and analyze data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred; Master's or PhD in a related field is advantageous.
  • Qualified to sit for the patent bar; preferably licensed to practice before the USPTO.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of patent documentation principles and procedures.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging developments in the field.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with prosecution docketing systems.
  • Ability to manage confidentiality and ethical responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; advanced degrees are a plus.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration.
  • Time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.

Benefits

  • This role may be hybrid, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office, with up to two days remote.
