Profile
A law firm seeks a Senior Ethics Attorney to join its fully remote practice. This attorney will provide counsel and defense in legal ethics matters, including disciplinary proceedings, reinstatements, and related investigations, primarily on behalf of fellow attorneys and law students.
Duties
Offer legal counsel and strategic guidance to attorneys under State Bar scrutiny, ensuring clients understand their rights and potential outcomes.
Investigate ethics complaints by reviewing documents, conducting witness interviews, and analyzing allegations to formulate tailored defense plans.
Draft persuasive legal briefs, motions, responses, and other materials needed for disciplinary defense, and represent clients at hearings and oral arguments before bar associations.
Negotiate settlements with regulatory bodies when appropriate, seeking resolutions that safeguard client interests and uphold ethical standards.
Partner with colleagues to pool expertise, coordinate case strategies, and support overall defense efforts.
Maintain contemporaneous billing records (e.g., via Clio) and contribute to a collegial, supportive virtual work environment.
Requirements
Minimum of 5 years of experience handling legal ethics matters, State Bar disciplinary defense, or closely related fields.
Demonstrated track record of advising and representing clients in high-stakes ethics or professional responsibility proceedings.
Proven ability to manage an independent caseload in a self-directed, remote setting.
Strong problem-solving aptitude and capacity to develop innovative, tailored defense strategies.
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills to juggle multiple matters concurrently.
Education
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
Certifications
Active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; additional state admissions (especially California) preferred.
Skills
Superior analytical and legal research capabilities to dissect complex ethical issues and craft sound arguments.
Excellent written advocacy and verbal communication skills for clear, persuasive interaction with clients, opposing counsel, and regulatory bodies.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Clio (or similar billing platforms) is a plus.
Comfort with technology and virtual platforms; ability to quickly adopt new software and remote collaboration tools.
Adaptability and eagerness to collaborate, accept feedback, and continuously refine strategy in a fast-paced environment.
Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
