Job Overview:
A highly regarded law firm is seeking a Patent Agent with a strong scientific background to join its Patents and Innovations (Counseling and Prosecution) Practice. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, intellectually curious, and collaborative scientist with a passion for translating complex scientific developments into strategic intellectual property protection. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge innovations across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and digital health, supporting patent prosecution and counseling initiatives for a diverse portfolio of clients.

Location:

  • San Diego, CA

     

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in life sciences and related technology areas

  • Conduct prior art searches and prepare freedom-to-operate and patentability opinions

  • Collaborate with attorneys and clients to develop global patent strategies

  • Assist in managing domestic and international patent portfolios

  • Support IP due diligence and related transactional matters

  • Remain up to date on developments in patent law and life sciences technology

Requirements:

  • Prior experience as a patent agent in a law firm or industry setting is preferred

  • Strong interest in intellectual property strategy and innovation protection

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a legal and scientific team

  • Excellent communication, time management, and analytical skills

Education:

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in a relevant life sciences or engineering field, including:

    • Molecular or Cell Biology

    • Immunology

    • Biochemistry

    • Bioengineering

    • Bioinformatics

    • Organic Chemistry

    • Medicinal Chemistry

    • Cancer Biology

    • Pharmacology

    • Biophysics

    • Digital Health–related disciplines

Certifications:

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or eligibility to sit for the USPTO patent bar

Skills:

  • Strong scientific writing and patent drafting capabilities

  • Deep understanding of biological and biochemical systems

  • Proficiency in analyzing technical disclosures and developing patent strategies

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
