Part-time Housing Attorney
The candidate will conduct intake interviews with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Prepare the necessary legal documents for clients. Maintain ongoing communication with clients. Represent clients in eviction and restraining order cases. Advocate for clients with landlords and housing authorities as needed. Participate as Member of Legal Team. Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings. Assist with development, training and supervision of legal interns and volunteer attorneys. Assist with ongoing development and training of legal intake workers. Represent FVLC in the Legal Community. Participate in community meetings as assigned. Make domestic violence presentations to other community agencies and participate in domestic violence trainings as required. Work in partnership with the Housing Case Manager and the Housing Staff Attorney to provide comprehensive housing advocacy for domestic and sexual assault survivors. Develop expertise in fighting substandard housing conditions and discrimination and represent clients with those issues, as needed. Maintain accurate client files and regularly update data on client contacts, case information, court hearings, and court orders obtained. Other duties as assigned. Licensed to practice law in California and in good standing required. 2 years of experience representing clients in eviction defense matters and advocating with landlords and housing authorities required. Ability to relate well with people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds required. Knowledge and awareness of local, regional, and national issues related to domestic violence required. Proficient with Microsoft Word required. Excellent organizational and time management skills required. Excellent oral and written communications skills required. Bilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cantonese and/or Mandarin preferred. Experience working with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors preferred. California domestic violence counselor certification (40-hour training) preferred. Knowledge of Alameda County service providers preferred.
