Senior Labor and Employment Attorney
Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm in Portland, ME, is seeking a seasoned attorney to lead and support its labor and employment legal practice. This role involves handling complex employment litigation, advising on workplace compliance, mentoring legal staff, and representing clients before courts and administrative bodies. The opportunity is ideal for a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of employment law, proven courtroom experience, and the capacity to operate independently while fostering team development.
Duties:
Advise clients on workplace issues, including discrimination, harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation claims
Represent clients in state and federal court proceedings and before administrative agencies
Draft pleadings, motions, discovery documents, and legal memoranda with minimal oversight
Lead and participate in depositions, hearings, and mediations
Review, draft, and revise workplace policies and employee handbooks
Deliver workplace training on compliance and legal risk mitigation
Supervise, mentor, and assign tasks to associates, paralegals, and support staff
Collaborate remotely and in-office with attorneys across various locations
Contribute to firm-wide knowledge by presenting on legal developments
Maintain meticulous timekeeping records and ensure timely billing practices
Requirements:
Minimum of 10 years’ experience handling employment law matters, including litigation and workplace counseling
Proficiency in managing high-stakes, complex legal matters independently
Prior experience guiding junior attorneys and support staff
Familiarity with Maine labor laws or eligibility to waive into the Maine Bar
Exceptional written and oral advocacy skills
Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Certifications:
Active license to practice law
Admission to the Maine Bar (or eligible to obtain admission through waiver)
Skills:
Strong leadership and mentorship capabilities
Litigation experience including depositions, motions practice, and trial preparation
Client-centered approach with attention to detail and practical problem-solving
Technologically proficient with legal research and case management tools
Clear communicator with the ability to present to internal teams and external stakeholders
