Staff Attorney
The candidate will work closely with the Director of Domestic Violence Law Practice. Lead all phases of law practice, including intake and initial client interviews, drafting pleadings, engaging in discovery, taking depositions, drafting and briefing motions, appearing before the Lake and Cook County Domestic Violence Court for emergency orders and plenary hearings, and before the Lake and Cook County Family Court for motion hearings, trials and, if necessary, appeals. Work with immigration and housing attorneys if there are immigration or housing aspects of the case. Supervise, train, and support the professional growth of volunteer attorneys and legal interns. Build, manage, and maintain relationships with outside counsel and other legal advocacy community organizations. Collaborate with team to identify, develop, revise, and implement client intake systems, case management, litigation protocols and related systems. Develop and maintain relationships with local townships DV agencies, shelters, stakeholders, or other external agencies. Ensure compliance with ethical rules and all applicable regulations. Should have a J.D. and good standing to practice law in Illinois. Should have 3+ years in a family law practice with significant experience representing survivors of domestic violence. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred. Understanding of the company's public interest law/nonprofit mission. Must have demonstrated team player with exemplary interpersonal skills in collaborating and communicating with others. entrepreneurial spirit, and ability to succeed in a fast-paced nonprofit start-up environment.
