Director of Advocacy, Global Road Safety

Duties: Will provide leadership and strategic oversight to road safety program and lead a team supporting civil society organizations advocating for policy change and engaging in regulatory reforms that aim to improve road safety and prevent road crash deaths and injury by addressing five key behavioral risk factors: speeding, seatbelts, child restraints, helmets, and drunk driving. Will report to the Managing Director of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator and will work closely with the staff in DC, staff in-country, and key global and in-country partners to help governments and civil society groups advance key policy change and advocacy goals that reduce road safety injury and death in select countries. Will oversee the road safety strategy and ensure it effectively advances policy change efforts in priority countries and will develop and manage the full road safety team, which consists of advocacy country leads as well as communications, legal, and support staff. Will keep abreast of progress in priority countries and be responsible for leading team efforts to ensure the development and implementation of effective advocacy strategies, as well as reporting on progress. Will work with the team to refine and implement an overall strategy and work plan, and identify key partners and opportunities for locally-led policy advocacy campaigns and actions. Will guide the team in identifying local grantee partners to lead these efforts and by focusing on training, capacity building, and evaluation to ensure both the local partners’ and the program’s success. Will assess the policy landscape and political feasibility to advance policy change by identifying policy gaps and guiding the development of draft legislation or regulations, where needed. Will work closely with the communications team to both build capacity and advance media strategies to support the program’s policy goals. will work to integrate research and ground-level advocacy efforts in an evidence-based approach as well as set the framework for evaluation and the integration of learnings from this work across the Incubator. Will oversee the management of the Global Road Safety Program and will work with the Road Safety team to ensure the effective operation of the program. Will be responsible for the Road Safety Program work plan that will outline the roles and responsibilities that will play within the larger Philanthropies road safety initiative, as well as corresponding indicators to allow for monitoring and evaluation of the program. Will oversee the road safety budget, as well as be responsible for identifying, recruiting and managing the road safety program staff. Will serve as primary liaison with Philanthropies and global road safety partners, providing strategic direction to coordinated policy change efforts.
