Job Overview
A respected international law firm is seeking a highly skilled Senior Environmental Attorney to join its Environmental and Mass Tort practice group. The position involves advising on regulatory compliance, permitting, site remediation, and risk management related to large-scale infrastructure, renewable energy, and power projects. This role is ideal for attorneys with strong experience in environmental law and a passion for advising clients on high-stakes, high-value transactions across the energy and infrastructure sectors, particularly in connection with project finance and M&A.
Location
Duties
Counsel clients on federal and state environmental laws impacting energy and infrastructure development.
Lead environmental permitting processes, including air, water, wetlands, UIC, and offshore facility permits.
Manage environmental reviews under NEPA, CEQA, and similar state processes.
Advise on remediation strategies under CERCLA, RCRA, and related state waste programs.
Conduct due diligence and draft environmental provisions in project finance and M&A transactions.
Coordinate with lenders, developers, and project finance teams on environmental risk mitigation.
Interpret and assess third-party environmental reports such as Phase I/II ESAs and ecological assessments.
Review title and survey documentation to identify environmental and land use restrictions.
Provide legal guidance on ESA compliance, habitat conservation, and land use permitting.
Advise on environmental implications of carbon markets, CCS, and energy transition technologies.
Support clients involved in cross-border energy projects and international compliance matters.
Requirements
Minimum of 8 years’ experience in environmental law.
Demonstrated expertise with U.S. federal and state environmental regulatory programs.
Substantial involvement in energy or infrastructure sectors.
Experience handling complex permitting and environmental review processes.
Familiarity with risk allocation in transactional contexts, including representations and indemnities.
Ability to work collaboratively with legal, technical, and finance professionals.
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Certifications
Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
Skills
Deep knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, CERCLA, RCRA, UIC, ESA, and related laws.
Strong drafting, analytical, and negotiation skills.
Proficiency in evaluating complex environmental documents and surveys.
Practical understanding of land use laws and public utilities regulations.
Ability to provide strategic guidance on evolving areas such as energy transition and carbon policy.
Skilled in managing client relationships and navigating cross-disciplinary teams.
