Staff Attorney
The candidate provides legal assessment, counsel and representation to clients. Working with a team of three other attorneys, the Staff Attorney addresses the legal needs of two distinct groups: 1) LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking and 2) HIV+ individuals in need of assistance with housing, public benefits, and estate planning. 1. Provide legal services to clients: Perform client intakes and assessments to determine clients’ legal needs. Provide legal representation and counsel to clients in matters within scope of the program. Refer clients to other legal services and community services as appropriate. Provide administrative support to the Legal Team, including, but not limited to: answering the Legal Line, drafting, filing, and collaborative project tasks. Other duties as required. 2. Help expand the capacity of attorneys and legal service providers in Massachusetts to provide culturally competent services to LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking: Build and maintain referral relationships with all legal service agencies, law firms, attorneys and allied survivor-serving organizations around Massachusetts. In conjunction with the GLBT Domestic Violence Coalition, recruit/train/manage a pool of pro bono attorneys. Provide periodic educational forums/trainings for mainstream legal service providers and court personnel in Massachusetts to increase cultural competency regarding issues facing LGBQ/T survivors. 3. Participate in program outreach, public relations and development activities. Collaborate with fellow members of the legal team and staff of the Violence Recovery Program to provide occasional educational/outreach presentations. Prepare required reports for managers and funders, including internal monthly reports summarizing activity and outcome data to evaluate program performance and inform continuous improvement strategies. Assist in developing and drafting content for articles, grant proposals or promotional materials. 4. Meet Fenway Health Professionalism and Participatory Expectations. Adhere to all agency and departmental policies and procedures; Adhere to the highest principles of legal professionalism and patient/client confidentiality; Adhere to all Fenway Health policies and procedures, including established safety protocols; identify potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to rectify the situation; Attend all required agency and departmental meetings, in-services and professional trainings. Should have Juris Doctorate or other law degree from a U.S. law school. Should be Licensed to practice law in Massachusetts. Should have 1 – 3 years legal practice experience. Should have excellent written (legal writing and other) and oral communication skills. Proficiency in public speaking; prior experience conducting training a plus. Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Comfort with, and working knowledge of, LGBTQ communities, communities living with and at-risk for HIV/AIDS, principles of safety planning for survivors of violence, and public health harm reduction principles.
