A law firm seeks a dedicated Associate Civil Litigation Attorney to join its Kansas City, MO, office in a full-time, on-site capacity. Duties
Manage a docket of civil defense cases from inception through trial, including personal injury, premises liability, property damage, and automobile accident matters
Conduct direct client interviews, gather facts, and maintain ongoing client communication throughout each case’s lifecycle
Draft and file pleadings, motions, responses, and legal memoranda tailored to each case’s unique facts and procedural posture
Lead discovery efforts: prepare and respond to interrogatories, requests for production, and coordinate depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts
Perform legal research on Missouri and Kansas civil procedure rules, statutes, and relevant case law to inform case strategy and motion practice
Prepare for and appear at pretrial conferences, motion hearings, mediations, and settlement negotiations
Collaborate with senior attorneys to develop litigation strategy, evaluate case valuations, and assess risk exposure
Assist with trial preparation, including exhibit organization, witness preparation, trial briefs, and courtroom presentation
Work alongside paralegals and staff to ensure efficient document management, deadline tracking, and overall case organization
Requirements
Active license to practice law in Missouri or Kansas (both preferred) and maintained in good standing
Extensive civil defense litigation experience, with exposure to personal injury, property damage, premises liability, or automobile accident cases
Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, trial-oriented practice
Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail, capable of managing multiple matters and deadlines simultaneously
Effective written communication skills: drafting persuasive motions, briefs, and client correspondence
Confident oral advocacy: presenting arguments in hearings, mediations, and trial settings
Familiarity with e-filing systems, case management software, and legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis)
Demonstrated work ethic, adaptability, and commitment to continuous learning and professional growth
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
Certifications
Active membership in the Missouri and/or Kansas Bar
Membership or participation in professional defense litigation associations is a plus
