This opportunity is ideal for individuals with a strong scientific background and proven legal experience in intellectual property, particularly patent prosecution. Duties:

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical sectors

  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and validity analyses

  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients to understand scientific concepts and align them with legal strategy

  • Review and draft opinions, respond to office actions, and support IP portfolio development

  • Maintain ongoing communication with clients and manage expectations with a service-focused approach

  • Contribute to strategic planning for IP protections aligned with clients’ commercial objectives

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years of direct experience in biotech or pharmaceutical patent prosecution

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex legal assignments with limited supervision

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams

  • Excellent written communication and analytical skills

  • Familiarity with patent filing and prosecution processes in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Education:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD preferred) in biology, biochemistry, immunology, or molecular and cellular biology

  • JD from an accredited law school (required for attorney applicants)

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration (required)

  • Active license in Oregon or Washington, or eligibility for reciprocity

Skills:

  • Scientific literacy in biotechnology and pharmaceutical innovations

  • Legal drafting and analytical reasoning

  • Client relationship management

  • Team collaboration and initiative-taking

  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines

Job Location:

  • Portland, OR

  • Hybrid schedule encouraged, with office presence expected Tuesday through Thursday and remote flexibility on Mondays and Fridays
