Mid- To Senior-Level Tax + Benefits Associate Attorney - Energy Industry
Job Overview:
A Richmond, VA-based law firm is seeking a seasoned Tax & Benefits Associate to join its energy-focused transactional tax team. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of renewable energy credit structures and complex transactional tax work involving mergers, acquisitions, and financing. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside key stakeholders in the energy sector, including project sponsors, financial institutions, and utility-affiliated entities. The role also provides firmwide collaboration and exposure to high-profile tax matters.
Duties:
Advise on federal tax implications of renewable energy credit transactions
Handle tax structuring for investments in solar, wind, energy storage, and carbon capture projects
Draft and review partnership agreements and related tax documentation
Guide clients on tax equity financing, mergers, and acquisitions in the energy industry
Collaborate with clients, including utilities, developers, and lenders, on tax planning strategies
Support tax due diligence and risk assessments in complex transactions
Contribute to thought leadership via publications and presentations in relevant professional circles
Engage across multiple offices for collaborative transactional execution and client delivery
Requirements:
5 to 8 years of experience in transactional tax law
Demonstrated expertise in renewable energy tax credits and related project financing
Prior experience with partnerships, including drafting of agreements and rendering tax opinions
Strong command of federal tax law applicable to the energy sector
Ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines in a fast-paced legal environment
Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Certifications:
Active license and good standing to practice law in Virginia

Strong interpersonal and client management skills
