Job Overview

A prominent law firm is seeking an associate to join its Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation practice group. This role provides the opportunity to develop expertise in ERISA and employee benefits law while working on complex matters involving qualified plans, health and welfare plans, and benefits issues in mergers and acquisitions or restructurings. The position is open in either the Chicago or Houston office and offers the chance to contribute meaningfully to a collaborative and specialized legal team.

Location

Duties

• Advise clients on ERISA compliance and employee benefit plan matters

• Provide counsel on qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and multiemployer pension plans

• Support M&A and restructuring transactions from an employee benefits perspective

• Draft and review plan documents, benefits agreements, and compliance communications

• Navigate regulatory frameworks including the Affordable Care Act (ACA)

• Collaborate with corporate, tax, and labor teams on interdisciplinary matters

Requirements

• 1–4 years of experience in ERISA and employee benefits law

• Experience with M&A and/or restructuring in the context of employee benefits

• Familiarity with the compliance aspects of qualified plans and health/welfare programs

• Background in related legal areas such as tax, labor, or consulting (considered an asset)

Education

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school

Certifications

• Admission to the bar in Illinois or Texas, or eligibility for prompt admission

Skills

• Strong legal research and writing abilities

• Proficiency in analyzing complex regulatory issues

• Effective communication skills with both legal teams and corporate clients

• Detail-oriented with the ability to manage deadlines across multiple matters

• Interest in developing deep expertise in ERISA and benefits law
