This role is ideal for a seasoned attorney with a strong ability to attract and retain clients, demonstrated by a significant portable book of business. The firm values diversity and encourages candidates who contribute to a more inclusive workplace to apply. Compensation is highly competitive and primarily based on business origination, with additional opportunities for contributions to firm-wide matters. Small groups meeting the firm’s billing expectations are also invited to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and expand the firm’s Intellectual Property practice, representing clients in matters including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and IP-related litigation.
  • Manage and grow a portfolio of clients, bringing a portable business of at least $600,000 in annual billings.
  • Provide strategic legal advice to clients on intellectual property protection, licensing, enforcement, and litigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement IP strategies for a variety of clients, including startups, established businesses, and multinational corporations, across a range of industries.
  • Represent clients in IP disputes, including infringement litigation, administrative proceedings before the USPTO, and international arbitration.
  • Oversee the prosecution of patents and trademarks, including managing patent portfolios and handling global IP registration strategies.
  • Mentor junior attorneys and support staff to ensure high-quality client service and foster professional growth within the practice group.
  • Contribute to the firm’s business development efforts by building relationships, attending industry events, and promoting the firm’s IP practice to attract new clients.
  • Support the firm’s diversity and inclusion goals by contributing to a culturally dynamic and equitable work environment.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Intellectual Property law, with expertise in both litigation and transactional matters.
  • Proven ability to attract and maintain client relationships, with a portable book of business generating at least $600,000 per annum.
  • Extensive experience in patent and trademark prosecution, IP portfolio management, and intellectual property litigation.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. and international intellectual property laws, including experience with patent law, trademark protection, copyright law, and trade secret litigation.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to present complex IP matters clearly and persuasively to clients, courts, and regulatory bodies.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with experience in managing legal teams and mentoring junior attorneys.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in the New York State Bar (or eligibility for reciprocity).
  • Admission to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred, particularly for candidates specializing in patent law.

Desired Skills:

  • Expertise in drafting and negotiating IP licensing agreements, technology transfer agreements, and other contracts related to intellectual property rights.
  • Strong litigation skills, with a track record of success in IP infringement cases and a deep understanding of the litigation process.
  • Ability to manage a diverse range of IP matters across multiple industries, including technology, pharmaceuticals, entertainment, and consumer goods.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on growing the firm’s IP practice and contributing to its broader business development goals.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, client-centered legal solutions, ensuring strong client satisfaction and long-term relationships.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation structure primarily based on business origination, with additional rewards for firm-wide contributions and collaboration.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including 401(k) retirement plan, health and dental insurance, disability coverage, and subsidized gym membership.
